Europe forecast - May 12, 2018
Often Unsettled
Heavy Downpours Likely

Issued: 0530hrs Saturday 5th May 2018
Duty forecaster: Matthew Hugo

Low pressure will dominate the weather across most areas of Europe this weekend bringing showery conditions and with regional thunderstorms too.

Saturday
Into Saturday and with the exception of most of Scandinavia which will experience high pressure and mainly dry and fine conditions, much of Europe will be dominated by low pressure systems. This is set to bring showers to much of the British Isles and down into France and Iberia, where afternoon thunderstorms are certainly expected. Similar conditions will extend eastwards in to parts of Germany, Belgium and Switzerland, for example. More eastern areas of Europe, including Poland and surrounding countries will also see sunshine and showers, locally heavy showers through the afternoon as well. Much of the Med will be warm with plenty of sunny spells, but with pressure still quite low even here then afternoon downpours and thunderstorms are possible almost anywhere.

Sunday
During sunday and not a great deal of change in the weather is forecast. Pressure will be highest across parts of Sweden and Finland where further mainly dry weather is predicted with some sunny spells at times. Otherwise low pressure will continue to dominate, especially across the British Isles where showers or longer spells of rain are forecast. Similar conditions extend down in to France with rain or showers here, perhaps with some thunderstorms too across more eastern areas of France and into Belgium and western areas of Germany during the afternoon. Pressure may well slowly rise across Portugal and Spain during the day so potentially drier and brighter here than compared with Saturday, but still cool for the time of year, while much of the Med, along with eastern areas of Europe remain rather warm and humid but with afternoon downpours and thunderstorms developing.
