Warm start to week

Issued: 0900 Thursday 13th July 2017
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Mostly dry in the south at first, drizzle in the northwest then warm and dry for all early next week

A mostly dry few days ahead across much of England and Wales. There will be some patchy rain affecting Scotland, Ireland and northern England with drizzle on western coasts and hills. Turning dry for all early next week and warmer too, although as the heat builds there is likely to be thundery rain in the middle of the week before turning fresher and showery later.

Sunday 16/7/17
A weak cold front passing east through the UK on Sunday. This brings a band of cloud and some patchy rain in northern England and Wales as first. Dry for most of the rest of England and Wales with cloud breaking and some bright or sunny spells, the best in the southeast. Showers follow into northern and western parts of Scotland, but drier and brighter east and south. Highs at 25C in southeast England, 16C in northern Scotland and much of Ireland.

Monday 17/7/17
Monday sees an area of high pressure build across the country. A weak front is still in evidence across the far south giving cloud here. This should break to leave sunny spells. Cloud too in western Scotland perhaps with a spot of drizzle in the northwest. The rest of the country should be dry with sunny spells. Highs at 19 to 24C.

Tuesday 18/7/17
High pressure drifts to the east of the country on Tuesday. There may be a few showers developing in southeast England. Elsewhere it should be dry with sunny spells. The best of the sunshine in western parts of the country. Temperatures at 21 to 27C.

Wednesday 19/7/17
Pressure is likely to be lowering across southern areas of the country through Wednesday. This encourages some thundery showers to develop and track slowly northwards during the day. Drier in Scotland and the far north of England with sunny spells here. Highs near a warm 27C in parts of southern England, 20 to 24C elsewhere and feeling muggy.

Thursday 20/7/17
Low pressure is likely to be affecting much of the UK and Ireland on Thursday. This brings the risk of rain and showers, especially in the north and west. However, detail in the forecast is difficult to assess at this time and it may be that the rain is more widespread. Temperatures around 17 to 22C.

Friday 14/7/17
Low pressure is likely to pass to the northwest of Scotland on Friday. This brings further showers and outbreaks of rain to Scotland and Ireland. Showers elsewhere, some of them heavy at times, but tending to be more scattered to the south. Highs at 16 to 24C.
