Staying mixed
Drier east, wetter west

Issued: 0900 Tuesday 19th September 2017
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

A mixed week with drier weather to the east and wetter weather to the west

High pressure is trying to build to the east in the coming days with low pressure to the west. That means that the UK and Ireland are going to be in the battle ground between these two competing areas. There is much uncertainty about which one will win out and whether conditions will lean towards wetter or drier. It is expected that temperatures will be milder.

Friday 22/9/17
High pressure stays to the east on Friday with lower pressure to the west. There will be a weak front in western areas with some showery outbreaks of rain in western Scotland, western Wales and western England as well as eastern Ireland. More eastern and southern areas tending to stay dry with sunny spells and drier conditions. Breezy in Ireland with broken cloud and mostly dry. Highs at 14 to 19C.

Saturday 23/9/17
High pressure over Scandinavia on Saturday with low pressure to the west. This is going to be bringing a mostly dry day with sunny spells although there could be some low cloud on eastern coasts. A front brings rain into the far west of Ireland and perhaps the far west of Scotland. Breezy in the west. Highs at 15 to 22C.

Sunday 24/9/17
High pressure stays to the northeast bringing an increasing southeast wind. The day should be mostly fair with sunny spells, although rather breezy. Cloud and some outbreaks of rain in the far west of Scotland. Eastern coasts of Scotland and England could see some lower cloud. Highs at 16 to 22C.

Monday 25/9/17
Pressure stays generally high through Monday bringing some low cloud and mist in the morning and perhaps a few spots of drizzle in the east. Generally the cloud breaks to give some sunny spells although rain and stronger winds may reach Ireland and western Scotland later. Tops at 15 to 22C.

Tuesday 26/9/17
Lower pressure west of Ireland on Tuesday with high pressure to the east. Weak fronts may bring some showery rain into southern England and Wales, with stronger winds and more persistent rain in Ireland. Drier to the north and east. Highs at 15 to 21C.

Wednesday 27/9/17
Indications that a deeper area of low pressure is to the west of Ireland on Wednesday. Fronts push east taking stronger winds and some rain with it. Heavy showers following to the west. Highs at 15 to 19C.
