Suddenly summer
Lots of sunshine

Issued: 1000hrs Thursday 12th April 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Blustery west, some rain

A big change is on the way next week, as a plume of warm air is drawn across the British Isles on southerly winds. It will feel like we have jumped head first into summer with temperatures soaring into the 20s Celsius for many places, and locally it may reach 25C. Western regions of Britain and Ireland may see occasional rain, otherwise there will be a lot of dry weather and strong sunshine next week.

Sunday 15/04/18
A front moves in from the west, bringing outbreaks of rain to Ireland and also western fringes of Britain, most persistent toward the south-west. Brisk southerly winds around western coasts. Light winds toward the south-east. Central & eastern Britain will be dry with a good amount of sunshine, but clouding up from the west. Highs 12 to 15C north & west. South-eastern areas pleasantly warm at 17 to 19C.

Monday 16/04/18
A weakening front passes north-eastwards, leaving fairly cloudy skies for west and northern areas, with localised showers. Otherwise a bright day across the Midlands and south, with sunny spells. Brisk southerly winds for Ireland and western Britain, light winds toward the east. Atlantic fronts bring rain to western Ireland. Very mild, or warm in the sunshine in the south-east, reaching 15 to 19C.

Tuesday 17/04/18
A southerly airflow continues, with high pressure focused to the east. Breezy in the west and north. Some rain may affect Ireland and western Scotland, but most of Britain will be dry. Plenty of warm spring sunshine is likely for the Midlands, east & south-east. Cool on the coasts. Inland highs 16 to 21C.

Wednesday 18/04/18
Lots of fine weather likely into midweek. A warm south to southeasterly airflow across the British Isles. Breezy in the north & west, with a risk of some rain for western Ireland. Highs 18 to 23C, cooler near coasts.

Thursday 19/04/18
Little change to a generally dry and mild pattern. Lots of sunshine. Cooler around coasts, but temperatures feeling like early summer for many at 18 to 23C, locally perhaps warmer in favoured spots to the north of high ground.

Friday 20/04/18
Staying dry and warm for most. Chance of mist patches near some coasts. Otherwise lots of strong sunshine. Highs 18 to 23C.
