Week ahead - March 31, 2018
Unsettled start to April
Mild south, cool north

Issued: 1000hrs Saturday 31st March 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Heavy showers, some brighter periods

No immediate sign of settled weather, as low pressure dominates the weather scene across Britain and Ireland during much of the week ahead. The odd brighter day, but most places will see rain or showers frequently. Scotland stays in chilly air, but things do turn somewhat milder elsewhere during midweek, but sustained warmth remains elusive at this stage.

Tuesday 03/04/18
Low pressure lies west of Britain, with an unsettled southwesterly pattern dominating. Heavy bursts of rain will break out increasingly for many areas, with hail and thunder possible. Blustery winds, gusting gale force in the south-west. Occasional sun, best toward the east & north-east. A front across northern Scotland brings areas of rain and mountain snow, where it stays cold at 4C. Mild in the sun for central England, highs 10 to 14C.

Wednesday 04/04/18
Generally unsettled with low pressure in charge. Detail uncertain. Areas of persistent rain and slow-moving downpours. Hail and thunder locally. Some brighter or sunny periods. Winds varied, localy light, but may be close to gale force around some southern coasts. Local mist patches in the morning. Staying cold in the far north with snow on Scottish mountains. Temperatures ranging from 7 to 13C.

Thursday 05/04/18
Low pressure pulls away eastwards, allowing a brief improvement to develop from the south-west. A few showers possible, mostly in the north and east. A chilly start with frost in some areas where skies clear. Sunny spells by day. A risk of further fronts knocking on the door from the south-west later, bringing a renewed risk of rain. Highs 7 to 12C.

Friday 06/04/18
Confidence is low. A southerly airflow should allow temperatures to improve. A risk of rain for western Britain and Ireland. Some bright spells in the east and north. Highs 8 to 14C.

Saturday 07/04/18
Staying fairly unsettled. Rain threatens to spill north and east across the country, followed by showers. Mild in the south-east, but cool in rain. Highs 7 to 14C.

Sunday 08/04/18
Sunshine and showers. Locally persistent rain possible, but detail very uncertain. Highs 7 to 13C.
