Week ahead - August 31, 2017
Warm days south & east
Rain spreading from west

Issued: 0930hrs Thursday 31st August 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Former tropical systems may produce heavy rain midweek

High pressure will influence country heading into the weekend, bringing a fine day on Saturday for most places. By Sunday, rain develops across western regions. A cloudy start to next week, with patchy rain possible, but also some warm sunshine in the east. Things look more unsettled by midweek as the remnants of various tropical weather systems move across Britain. A risk of heavy rain and strong winds.

Sunday 03/09/17
Eastern Britain is likely to stay dry and fairly warm with hazy sunshine. The far north of Scotland should also escape dry. Fronts moving into western areas bring thickening cloud and outbreaks of rain - this may turn heavy in the south-west. Showers following across Ireland. A strong south to south-easterly wind, touching gale force around western coasts. Temperatures up to 23C in East Anglia, 18 to 21C elsewhere, but cooler in rain.

Monday 04/09/17
A weakening band of rain pushes into central & eastern Britain overnight. A lot of cloud will be left across the country into the daytime, with a little rain locally. Showers for the north-west, some heavy. A south to south-westerly breeze, easing compared to Sunday. Some sun may break through, and where it does, temperatures up to 20 to 23C, warmest east. Nearer 16 to 18C west & north.

Tuesday 05/09/17
Staying largely dry, quite warm and humid in the east & south-east, with some sunshine. Generally more cloud in the west & north, with a risk of some patchy rain or drizzle. South-westerly winds freshening, bringing a threat of rain spreading into Ireland. Temperatures up to 24C in south-east England, 18 to 22C elsewhere.

Wednesday 06/09/17
Rain spreads from the west as low pressure moves in from the Atlantic. Some heavy falls are likely for some, but detail is very uncertain. Some places may escape dry with hazy sun, feeling warm and humid. Cooler where rain sets in. Possible strong winds, especially around coasts. Highs 17 to 23C.

Thursday 07/09/17
Low pressure is expected to reside across the British Isles. Slow moving zones of rain, heavy for many hours in some areas. Blustery winds. Again, locally it may stay mainly dry with some sun. Highs 16 to 23C.

Friday 08/09/17
Confidence low, but tending to improve as low pressure begins to weaken. A risk of residual showers, but a chance of becoming drier for many. Winds may ease. Highs 16 to 23C.
