A cold westerly pattern on Sunday and Monday brings snow and hail showers to west & north-western Britain and Ireland. Later in the week, a familiar chilly westerly pattern brings sunshine and wintry showers.

Tuesday 13/02/18
A frontal system moves from west to east, bringing a period of rain, and extensive hill snow. A chance of snow to lower levels for a time. Brisk southwesterly winds ahead of the front, then turning westerly. Brighter skies developing from the west, but heavy snow and hail showers follow into the far north-west. Temperatures 3 to 5C or below in some areas, but may rise briefly toward 8C in the south.

Wednesday 14/02/18
Low pressure to the west of Ireland is likely to push fronts north & east across the British Isles. Widespread rain, heavy for a few hours. Possible snow on the leading edge of this system for northern areas, likely becoming confined to the hills. South to southwesterly winds, locally up to gale force around coasts. Temperatures 2 to 5C north, 7 to 10C south, mildest south-west.

Thursday 15/02/18
Windy and cold, with strong to gale force westerlies across the country. Low pressure centred north of Scotland. A cold front is likely to have moved eastwards, leaving a showery pattern, with snow and hail to low levels, most frequent in the west & north-west. Isolated thunder. Sunny spells away from showers. Highs 2 to 7C, mildest far south, but feeling colder in the wind.

Friday 16/02/18
A similar chilly westerly pattern, with a mix of wintry showers and sunny spells. Snow and hail most frequent in west and north-western areas. Often dry with sunshine in central and eastern England. Frost and ice overnight. Highs 3 to 7C.

Saturday 17/02/18
A west to northwesterly wind is expected to continue. Wintry showers and some sunshine. Frost and ice in sheltered spots. Highs 3 to 7C.

Sunday 18/02/18
Low pressure is nearby, and the wind may become northerly. Generally cool or cold, with snow showers in northern and eastern districts. Highs 2 to 6C.
